Our Gardens at Malston Mill

The beautiful landscaped gardens in parkland setting will take your breath away, it does mine even after 24 years, in fact I think the more the gardens mature the better they are.  Also they are a host to wild life.

Enjoy England

Each year we endeavour to maintain Malston Mill Farm to its highest standard and the gardens are an on going challenge which we relish.  You are invited to do a little weeding or dead heading, if you so wish, we are delighted to be able to share the gardens with you and hope they give you as much pleasure and enjoyment as they do us.

What ever the season, from the daffodils in February right through to the vivid orange and red autumn colours in October/November, they offer something of interest.  In between you have the cherry blossom, camellias of which we have quite a collection, magnolias followed by the colourful perennials of summer and scented roses.

From the terraces and mixed borders, hot garden with tropical palms and bananas to the circular garden with its fountain and planting in a spectrum of colours, there is so much for you to enjoy.

Wild life is also bountiful with many visitors including Foxes, Badgers, Small deer, the Herons who try their luck on the side of the lake along with the kingfishers, moorhens, woodpeckers as will as the resident mallard ducks and their offspring.  Even a Mandarin duck and dipper have visited us recently.

The cuckoo can be heard from the woods as well as the owls, plus of course we attract a variety of garden birds which feed from our bird feeders.  We have a few nesting boxes but it is amazing where they will build their nests.  At night you may see small bats flying around.

Also our flowering shrubs and borders attract butterflies and bees.  The lake is stocked with specimen carp, tench, rudd and roach and there are a few trout and we have large lily bed.  The ponds and stream are home to frogs, toads newts, dragonfly lava and adult dragon flies

Who knows what you may be lucky enough to see, bring your binoculars.  You must visit our six chicken scratching around their spacious run and collect the eggs for your breakfast.

We are passionate about our gardens and environment and are privileged to live in such a beautiful place.  Where possible we try to be environmentally friendly and ourselves recycle all raw (not cooked) waste to the compost heap, you too can add your waste to our compost during your stay if you wish too.  This is then put back in to the gardens.

We water the gardens, where possible, from either the lake or spring overflow system.

The indoor swimming pool is heated with solar panels.

Low energy light bulbs are used when possible.  Emergency lighting and rechargeable torches.

Electricity is metered in the Autumn/winter months to avoid wastage.  You only pay for what you use and our rents are lowered accordingly but still include off-peak heating and hot water.  In the summer you are asked to switch off when not occupying a room or cottage.

The cottages have very thick stone walls and well insulated.
